Rancho Cucamonga Civic Center

Rancho Cucamonga, California

The Rancho Cucamonga Civic Center consists of a Civic Center/Council Chamber building, a Public Safety Facility building and an adjoining parking structure.

The structural system for the Civic Center building and the Public Safety Facility building consists of structural steel construction.  Structural concrete was used for the parking structure.

Both the Civic Center building and the Public Safety Facility building utilize composite metal deck slabs and composite steel beams as the floor framing system. However, to comply with architectural layouts, different lateral load resisting system are used for the two buildings.  The Civic Center building uses a dual system consisting of perimeter moment resisting frames coupled with interior eccentrically braced frames. For the Public Safety Facility building, conventional ductile moment resisting space frames were used. The use of a dual system for the Civic Center building resulted in a saving of 15% of structural steel over that of the Public Safety Facility building.

For the parking structure, the floor framing system is composed of precast prestressed double tees spanning between precast concrete girders. Shear walls were used to resist unbalanced soil pressure and earthquake induced forces.
