Hua Xia Garden

Shanghai, China

The Hua Xia Garden project, located in the southern part of Shanghai, will consist of three 30-story residential towers over four levels of retail space over two levels of subterranean parking. The total gross square footage of the mixed-use development is close to two million square feet with approximately two hundred thousand square feet of retail space.

A frame and shearwall system was chosen as the lateral load resistant elements for the towers.  A reinforced concrete flat plate system and a more conventional one-way slab and beam system were proposed for the floor framing system. The latter scheme, more economical and more consistent with local practice and construction methods,  was selected. Precast prestressed concrete driven piles are utilized as the foundation system.

One structural challenge for the towers was the construction method for the section that is straddled by the "legs" or "buttresses" of the towers.  Four schemes were proposed.  Ultimately, a system using launching trusses at the lowest high rise floor and cantilever construction similar to that of bridge construction was selected. A reinforced concrete Vierendeel truss system spans the ten-story middle section between the buttresses.
