Cheju Tower Hotel
Cheju Island, South Korea The Cheju Tower Hotel is a 223 room, 150 meter long resort hotel situated upstream of a gorge with a spectacular view of the valley below. The entrance/lobby level is at mid-height of the building, with four levels of guest rooms above it, and three levels of supporting facilities below, including restaurants, lounges, ballrooms, a health club and swimming pool, and the expansion space of an adjacent casino. The floor framing system consists of a reinforced concrete two-way flat plate system for the guest room floors and for the majority of the back-of-house area. A reinforced concrete one-way beam and slab system was used in the heavy loading areas, including the ballrooms, atria and grand stairway. Reinforced concrete shearwalls resist the lateral wind and seismic loads. Long, unbraced small diameter columns at the hotel support levels create the dramatic impression that the hotel is elevated above the gorge on stilts. A traditional pitched roof with a circular crown tops the building. |
